After completing her undergrad, Dr. Girens worked in research and received her masters degree. During her work in research she found a niche in working with the laboratory veterinarian and after shadowing in the clinic she knew that was what she wanted to do with her life.
Her journey in the veterinary field started with her thinking her focus would be in laboratory animal veterinary field. However, during coursework and clinical rotations she fell in love with cardiology, and her former resident mates in Florida helped solidify that love. Throughout residency, she enjoyed treating heart failure patients to give them the best quality of life in addition to the relationships developed with both patients and their owners. She enjoys connecting with owners to help them understand their pets disease and how to manage cardiac conditions, medically or surgically
She fell in love with the Pacific Northwest during an externship with a cardiologist in Seattle and excitedly joined the Summit Veterinary Referral team after her residency in 2022.
The Golden Retriever Foundation is once again combining its ongoing DNA blood collection project. There is no charge for the blood draws or shipping. GRF also absorbs the OFA CHIC fee for Goldens. For donating blood to the GRF projects with OFA and Broad Institute, please download and print the DNA Repository form located on the OFA website. Since these forms require extensive information, we strongly prefer this step be done in advance of the clinic, which will save you time on the day of the clinic.
Please download and complete the DNA Repository form and submit with this order, or return to GRCAHC@gmail.com to complete the pre-registration process.
Blood will also be drawn for the Golden Retriever DNA panels listed below.
GRCA will cover the cost of shipping.

Dr. Wendy Townsend, a primary researcher into PU, will be performing ultrasounds of Golden Retriever eyes. This non-invasive procedure is free of charge, is not painful or uncomfortable and has the potential to provide critical information for continuing research into this disease. Dr. Townsend will examine any Golden Retriever – healthy eyes or otherwise – 6 years and
older. Goldens without pedigrees or those from a rescue situation are more than welcome to become a part of this research project. Dependent on the interest in this year’s clinic, the age requirement is subject to change.
Dr. Townsend is strongly encouraging Golden Retrievers 12 years and older and those previously seen at PU clinics to participate in this year’s clinic. The clinic is limited to 125 dogs. Appointments will be arranged once judging schedules are announced.
Please download and complete the PU consent form and submit with the order, or return to GRCAHC@gmail.com to complete the pre-registration process.
This clinic is free but requires pre-registration.
